Arquitectura. INCLUSION—Critical Junctures

Writing

Contrary to the widespread belief that the profession has no future in Madrid, that the conditions for practicing are negative, Madrid's growth prospects offer significant challenges and professional opportunities for architects. A more sustainable, inclusive, and also more beautiful territory, metropolis, and architecture will be necessary. Accordingly, the profession will require institutions and tools that are up to the task.

The editorial project "The Future of Madrid" aims to reflect on the major transformations that will occur in Madrid over the next three decades, and to propose the changes that the profession requires in order to provide an effective response to the challenges that the future—the present, in fact—poses. The project not only seeks to anticipate the territorial, urban, and architectural strategies that will be necessary but also aims to reflect on the structure and competencies of the profession, as well as on the institutional framework it requires; asking how a way of practicing the profession that has imploded should be transformed, taking advantage of this opportunity to reinvent and strengthen itself with the aim of offering civil society the response that, from an architectural perspective, this great urban transformation requires.

To this end, seven themes or issues of professional interest are proposed—competitions, territory, climate, inclusion, the body, beauty, practice—capable of synthesizing many of the issues of concern and relevance to architects today, both in Madrid and nationally and internationally.

Each issue of the magazine will have a renowned associate editor. These editors are primarily architects—as well as architectural critics and historians—who are internationally renowned for each of the proposed topics and who are familiar with the reality of Madrid. These editors will be responsible for intellectually framing the topic and preparing an opinion piece on the future of Madrid.

The editors and co-editors include: Stan Allen and Luis Rojo; Chris .Reed and Pablo Pérez Ramos; Silvia Benedito; Tatjana Schneider and Enrique Espinosa; Beatriz Colomina and Marina Otero Verzier, Philip Ursprung and Jesús Vassallo; and Iñaki Ábalos
