Architectures of Care Summerschool
In October 2025 five students from the Technical University of Braunschweig got the opportunity to join the Summer School ‘architecture of care–thinking thru making‘, led by the University of Pavia, Italy. The project is part of 'Architecture of Care', initiated by Nadia Bertolino focusing on the social and relational value of architecture, on thinking through making as a process of collective learning and experimentation. It’s the second summer school aimed to develop a context-specific design solution through a community-based practice for the neighbourhood Rione Scala in Pavia.
During the five-day onsite workshop of this Erasmus-funded Blended Intensive Programme (BIP), the students formed three teams to work together on different topics. Group 1 designed and built the bookcrossing–shelf with integrated seating and playful elements, Group 2 documented the whole process in a short film and zine to share during and after the final event and Group 3 curated and promoted the public event, to which the neighbourhood, local initiators and collaborators were invited.
As part of GTAS, Jennifer presented the research project collective takeover, which takes place in Schwarzer Berg in the north of Braunschweig. It shows parallels to the neighbourhood in Rione Scala, so she talked about the beginnings of the initiative Quartier:PLUS, how it developed in the last 4 years and what insights they have gained during the research project. Thanks to the Staff Mobility Programme, Jennifer Baus was able to participate in the second summer school in Pavia, and can now incorporate the experiences she gained there into her research.
