The building industry, responsible for nearly 40% of global carbon emissions, underlines an urgent call for architects and scholars to reconsider their professional and educational approaches. Whilst the science is clear, there is little systematic analysis of the conditions of practice and its concrete entanglements with other fields. Our previous research project, 'Architecture after Architecture', highlighted a significant gap in the integration of climate knowledge into architectural education, with a notable lack of climate-centered courses globally. This proposed research aims to bridge this gap through a collaborative platform that blends climate-responsive design principles, sustainable practices, and the social-ethical dimensions of architecture, aiming to embed climate consciousness at the core of architectural education and practice.
Current architectural education, still primarily focused on design briefs and new built projects, overlooks the critical link between architecture and climate, failing to address the root causes of climate breakdown (e.g. imperialist or capitalist and extractivist forms of production). Despite efforts by some institutions to introduce critical curriculum perspectives, a comprehensive approach incorporating societal, environmental, and ethical considerations is urgently needed.
This research will explore the architecture-climate nexus across various geographies. Our goal is to establish an open, collaborative learning platform to tackle and leverage the challenges and opportunities within current architectural curricula, advocating for necessary shifts in spatial practices towards post-curriculum educational models that align spatial practice with climate considerations.
The funding—EUR 80,000 for an 18-months project—was awarded by the MWK to develop a large research application.
