Architecture School of Commons: GRRR WATERLANDSCAPES
Funded by a three-year Erasmus+ programme, the Architecture School Of Commons (ASOC) aims to activate collaborations through various formats in search for a new narrative of rural areas between three countries – France, Italy and Greece – by involving architecture students, academics, professionals and local communities. The partners include École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Grenoble (ENSAG) in France, the Department of Architecture and Design (DAD) at Politecnico di Torino in Italy, and the School of Architecture at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) in Greece. The initiatives, collectives and sites from the three countries respectively are La Place des Possibles in Saint-Laurent-en-Royans in collaboration with Collectif Etc, La Casa di BelMondo in Belmonte in collaboration between La Rivoluzione delle Seppie and Orizzontale, and the TiriLab Initiative in Thesprotia in collaboration with Zuloark.
Thanks to the Staff Mobility Programme, Burcu Daglayan and Ayat Tarik were able to be part of the third and last summer school in Morfi, Thesprotias in Greece. Over the course of a week, participants had the opportunity to delve into the water landscapes of the area, gaining insights into its mythological importance as well as exploring its political and social implications. By activating an old school building in Morfi as a base, participants had the opportunity to work collaboratively across three overlapping scales of work and research: Mythological Waterways, Water as a Lifeline and Water as a Co-living Infrastructure. Through various forms and formats with both tangible and intangible aspects, the participants were able to offer and attend different kind of workshops and work around fields such as recovering mythological routes, taking care of neglected infrastructures, and mapping places of biodiversity through local legends and myths. As part of GTAS, Burcu and Ayat offered a workshop to investigate local affairs together with students. The output of every scale was guiding participants in developing design solutions that respond to the challenges of the region, such as efficient water use and community-centric spaces.
