The symposium "REFUGE City" seeks to encourage a re-evaluation of our understanding and perspectives on cities since the industrial revolution. Beyond the excessive portrayal of cities as mechanized, ecologically detrimental, and occasionally dehumanizing environments, this symposium aims to bring alternate voices from and of cities to posit narratives that acknowledge cities as dynamic ecosystems offering refuge, empowerment, and resilience to both human and non-human inhabitants.
The Avani Annual Research Symposium “REFUGE City” proposes a narrative that resonates with the diverse urban realities from across the world, focusing especially on the global South.
The symposium's overarching goal is to contribute to the discourse on the present and future of 21st century cities, providing a platform where participants engage in dynamic dialogues, critical inquiries, and creative explorations. It seeks to encourage collaborations and meaningful discussions among urban planners, architects, policymakers, sociologists, environmentalists, artists, and community activists. This collective effort can help us relook, review, restore and reshape our cities, support and legitimise everyday realities of life and to strategise spatialities that support sustainable development.
The REFUGE City stretches far beyond the narrative of 'infrastructure,' all encompassing the intricate world of URBAN. It calls for challenging the status quo and reimagining the very nature of City: agency and affordances; City as a place of survival and refuge from life’s challenges.
Drawing on the research project 'Architecture is Climate', Tatjana will deliver the closing keynote of the symposium talking about future visions for architectural education and practice.
