Potted plants are everywhere. We have them at home and at work, in kitchens and bathrooms, in libraries and cafes and bars. They quietly surround us for decorative or inspirational purposes. But when it comes to their names, histories and functions, we tend to stumble and stutter.

‘House Plants of Braunschweig’ invites you to get to know a house plant in detail. We want you to choose a plant that has been living with you for a while, one that may have moved in recently, or one that you have always wanted to get to know.

This plant will become the focus of your attention and you will be asked to find out as much as you can about it, to get to know it: her habits and preferences, her needs and wants, what she likes and dislikes, what she eats or feeds on, how she reproduces, her preferred environment and companions. Draw her habitat, research and write up her history (where did her ancestors come from?), find out her real name, her country of origin and how she got to where she is now, find out if she is more than just nice to look at (does she have, for example, medicinal or other powers)—so that the quiet thing on a shelf or windowsill, will not be so quiet any more.

We will compile the stories of our house plants will be compiled into a small book.
